New Urbanism
New Urbanism is a way of looking at building communities that combines
the best of traditional neighborhood layout and building practices with
the best of contemporary floorplans and amenities. New Urbanism stresses
a bond and connection to existing neighborhoods; the ability to walk
to destinations such as parks, schools and shopping; and an emphasis
away from sprawl toward the center of town.

Neighborhood Solutions’s Philosophy
and New Urbanism
Mission:
The mission of Neighborhood Solutions is to build, enhance and preserve
dynamic and vibrant urban environments, with particular focus on existing
traditional core neighborhoods.
Why is this mission so important?
More than 1.2 million new homes were built in the United States in 2003.
Nearly 700 new homes were built in Monroe County, Indiana alone. These
numbers would seem to suggest that a prospective new home buyer would
have very little trouble finding just the right home for their family's
needs. And yet with so many homes being built, home buyers are all-too-often
frustrated by the fact that most new homes lack the charm and warmth
provided by older homes and that most new neighborhoods lack the sense
community found in older neighborhoods.
In spite of this, many home buyers choose to buy these new homes rather
than existing older homes, so that they can have the new plumbing and
wiring and modern kitchens and bathrooms that add comfort and convenience
to their lives. In doing so, these home buyers are often not fully aware
of what they might be giving up in the process:
- The opportunity to walk to a store or a park or a school.
- Chatting with a neighbor from a front porch. A vibrantly painted
home exterior and a streetscape that stimulates the eye.
- Connection to the larger community through a network of convenient
streets.
- A home design where the priority is comfort, utility and longevity,
not just square footage.
- A legacy that future generations will be proud of.
Over the last
50 years, the home construction industry has changed dramatically.
Somewhere along the way, the industry has lost sight of many important
quality-of-life amenities, and most development companies have instead
chosen to focus their energies on a much more limited housing product.
Neighborhood Solutions, LLC, is dedicated to changing this.
At the core of Neighborhood Solutions is a commitment to the urban
planning philosophies of New Urbanism and Traditional Neighborhood Design.
These philosophies place a powerful emphasis on quality-of-life and
human-scaled design. Every project that Neighborhood Solutions undertakes
will seek to build the complex network of amenities that turns a house
into a home and a collection of homes and buildings into a neighborhood.
In short, Neighborhood Solutions will reintroduce into our community
the classic home designs and the real neighborhood experiences that
so many of us are nostalgic for but have long ago given up hope of finding.
