Fire Chief Jeff Barlow on South Dunn Street:
|
This fully residential sprinklered development, which
we know is a first in Bloomington and possibly a first in the state
of Indiana, will leverage the benefits of modern technology with traditional
design.
Residential sprinklers save lives. The sprinklers, designed
specifically for the home, tactically place water on a developing fire
and can contain or outright extinguish the fire before it grows out
of control, endangering the occupants.
This project is a blend of the developer's desire for
a traditional feel with a commitment to the protection of those who
will call these houses home. I applaud developer Matt Press for his
commitment to making these homes fire safe. I hope his example sets
in motion future projects that will utilize this life-saving technology
for our community.

The In-home Fire Sprinklers:
All homes in the South Dunn Street Project will have in-home fire sprinkler
systems. These low cost, inconspicuous systems are an integrated part
of the home's standard water supply. In-home fire sprinklers are highly
reliable; triggered only by a heat sensor, they do not accidentally
activate. The system reacts in the first minutes of a fire to save lives
and reduce property damage. Dozens of U.S. communities currently mandate
these systems in all new home construction and many more are passing
legislation requiring their use every year. As an added benefit, many
insurance companies offer discounts on homes with in-home sprinkler
systems.
